Case: Bringing teams together

In June 2022, F-Secure was undergoing the biggest change in the 34-year history of the Finnish cybersecurity company. With a major new strategy re-focussing their product and technology development, and a demerger splitting the company into two new companies, hundreds of employees were affected by this change.

In the 150-person F-Secure R&D organization, this change created a need to bring teams together to align on the way forward. Having teams distributed across different locations and time zones, during a global pandemic, having a mutual offsite session was out of the question. Or was it?

“We thought it was enormously important to gather everyone together to discuss, share and collaborate, and to get a good start for the teams after the demerger. After all, we were now an independent business with a new strategy, vision and goals”, says Toby White, the Chief Technology Officer.

To help people make sense of their role – and their teams’ role – in the new business, an ambitious plan was put together to collaborate simultaneously in three locations across Finland and Malaysia.

Collaborating on the digital stage brought people together across geographies

People gathered in their local offices and worked together to bring their team’s purpose, goals and personality into life. As a concrete, shared output, everyone worked on the same picture, like a city map, to visualise and showcase their team in the larger context: one single “big picture”, showing how everybody had a place in the new organisation.

“It was a fun experience that certainly helped us get people onboard, and build a great sense of shared purpose and belonging. All the participants really appreciated the chance to get together and work with colleagues, old and new, and you could see the positive atmosphere grow throughout the day. Saara was a brilliant facilitator and worked really well with our own R&D team leads and coaches to make the day a success.”, continues Toby White.

The F-Secure City was born.

Feedback from the participants:

“The -Secure city design was great. Everyone was trying to think out of the box to link whatever they are doing into the city building.”

“Very engaging as it enhanced our brain to work together as a team to make the perfect city with clear and defined descriptions, such as the purpose and goals for our team.”

“Ideation about the future of our team was really nice. Found some concrete items what we want from the future.”

“I got to see a lot of new faces, this was a bit of break of routine, brings some cozy sense of community.”
